What Is an EMDR Intensive? Everything You Need to Know
If youβve never heard of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) before, youβre not alone. Many people discover it while looking for help with anxiety, trauma, stress, or recurring patterns that just wonβt quit. EMDR can sound mysterious, unusual name, unusual approach, but itβs actually gentle, structured, and backed by decades of research.
Think of it as a clever brain hack that helps your mind βfile awayβ tricky memories so they stop jumping out at you uninvited. When overwhelming events happen, your brain sometimes doesnβt fully process them. That memory can linger, showing up as anxiety, panic, or repeating patterns. EMDR helps your brain process experiences that got βstuckβ, so you remember the event, but it stops hijacking your life.

At Kate Landete Counselling we offer weekly and fortnightly EMDR sessions, but we also offer something called EMDR Intensive Therapy Packages.
What if healing didn't have to happen one hour at a time?
For many people, weekly therapy is exactly what's needed. Having regular support, a chance to reflect, and someone to walk alongside you can make a profound difference.
But sometimes...
You spend the week building up the courage to talk about something that's been weighing heavily on you. Just as you begin to settle into the session, it's time to finish. You leave feeling like you've only just scratched the surface.
Then life takes over again. Work gets busy. The kids need you. Appointments get rescheduled. Another week passes before you can return.
By the time you're back, it can feel like you're trying to find your way into the work all over again.
If you've ever felt like that, please know you're not doing therapy "wrong." It may simply be that the traditional one-hour model isn't the best fit for where you are right now.
So, what is an EMDR Intensive?
An EMDR Intensive is exactly what it sounds like, a dedicated period of time where we can focus on your healing without the constant stop-start that often comes with weekly appointments.
Instead of spreading therapy across months, we intentionally create space over a shorter period of time.
At Kate Landete Counselling, my EMDR Intensive includes:
A complimentary 20-minute discovery call to make sure an intensive is the right fit for you.
A comprehensive pre-assessment and questionnaire so I can understand your story before we begin.
A beautifully designed workbook to help you prepare, reflect and integrate your experience.
Three 2-hour EMDR sessions across two weeks.
A one-hour follow-up session to support your ongoing progress.
It's not about squeezing more therapy into less time. It's about creating the conditions where your brain and nervous system have the opportunity to stay connected to the healing process.
Why do people choose an EMDR Intensive?
Everyone's reasons are different.
Some people have been attending therapy for years and feel ready to move into deeper trauma processing.
Some travel from outside the Central Coast and want to make the most of their time.
Some have demanding careers or family commitments and find weekly appointments difficult to maintain.
Others simply don't want their healing to take a back seat anymore.
They've reached a point where they're ready to intentionally create space for themselves.
Because healing deserves space too.
Isn't it emotionally overwhelming?
This is probably one of the questions I'm asked most often. The word intensive can sound... well... intense. People often imagine hours of crying, feeling overwhelmed, or talking about painful memories all day.
In reality, that's not how I work.
EMDR isn't about throwing you into the deep end. Before we process anything, we spend time making sure you have the resources, skills and support to feel grounded. Throughout the intensive, we pause when needed. We regulate your nervous system. We check in often. There is space to breathe, reflect and integrate. The goal isn't to overwhelm you.
It's to help your brain do what it was always designed to do, process experiences that became emotionally "stuck."
What can an EMDR Intensive help with?
Every person's story is different, but EMDR can be helpful for many experiences, including:
Trauma and PTSD
Childhood experiences
Anxiety and panic
Birth trauma
Grief and loss
Relationship trauma
Low self-esteem
Distressing life events
Medical trauma
Phobias and fears
Feeling "stuck" despite years of therapy
If you're unsure whether EMDR is appropriate for you, that's exactly what the discovery call is for.
Why longer sessions can make such a difference
One of the things I love most about EMDR Intensives is that we don't have to rush.
There's time to settle.
Time to notice what's coming up.
Time to process.
Time to regulate.
Time to reflect.
So often in weekly therapy, just as someone begins accessing the deeper work, we're looking at the clock. With an intensive, we don't have that same pressure. Instead of stopping because the session is over, we can often continue until your nervous system reaches a more settled place before finishing for the day. For many people, that continuity feels incredibly valuable.
Is an EMDR Intensive right for everyone?
No, and I believe that's a good thing. Part of my role is helping you decide whether an intensive is the right approach for you at this point in your life. For some people, weekly therapy remains the best option. For others, an intensive provides the dedicated time and focus they've been looking for.
That's why every intensive begins with a complimentary discovery call and careful assessment. If I don't believe it's the right fit, I'll tell you.
Your wellbeing will always come before booking a program.
You don't have to keep carrying this alone.
One of the greatest privileges of my work is watching people realise that healing doesn't have to mean forgetting what happened.
It means remembering without feeling like you're living it all over again.
It means noticing that the things which once overwhelmed you no longer hold the same power.
It means feeling calmer.
More present.
More connected to yourself.
If you've spent years understanding your story but still feel like part of you is carrying the weight of it every day, perhaps it's time to explore a different approach.
Ready to find out whether an EMDR Intensive is right for you?
I offer a complimentary 20-minute discovery call where we can talk about what's been happening for you, answer any questions you have, and explore whether an EMDR Intensive feels like the right next step.
There is no pressure and no obligation, just an opportunity to see whether this approach aligns with what you're looking for.
Sometimes the hardest part is simply taking the first step.
You don't have to take it alone.
